Start with the use case, not the ranking. Talking-head realism, training at scale, social ads and real-time avatars are genuinely different jobs — the best tool for one is rarely the best for another, and our category lists below will get you closer than this overall ranking.
Watch the footage before you pay. Realism is the hardest thing to judge from a feature list, so use the free plans and our hands-on videos to see the avatar actually move — ideally in the language you will publish in, not just polished English.
Check the credit limits, not just the price. The monthly figure is rarely what bites; the number of render-minutes you get is. Two tools at the same price can differ 5x in how much video you can actually make.
Test custom cloning early if you need it. A platform’s stock avatars can be excellent while its clone of you is mediocre, or vice versa. If a clone is central to your plan, make it the first thing you trial.
Weigh switching cost. Avatars, voices and templates do not transfer between tools, so the one you pick is somewhat sticky. Favour a tool you can grow into over one you will outgrow in a quarter.
